The Central Tien-Shan Mountain Range is an empire of snow and ice. The highest mountains of Central Asia - Pobeda (Victory) Peak (7439 m) and Khan-Tengry (7010 m) are to be found here. The beauty and size of these great peaks sends most of the world's professional climbers into raptures. Indeed it has been said many times, justifiably, that Khan-Tengry is the "Matterhorn" of Central Asia. The similarity between these two great mountains is uncanny. In addition, the Enilchek Glacier and Lake Mercbaher, are as impressive as any places on Earth.
Itinerary
| Day 1 | Flight to Bishkek. Travel to Karakol. Accomodation in private houses. |
| Days 2 |
Travel from Karakol along the Karkara River Valley, stopping at the famous San-Tash barrow, then continuing through the Kyzyl-Moinok Pass (2600 m), visiting the Ak-Chunkur Cave in the Sary-Djaz River Valley. The distance travelled is approximately 150 km. Overnight in tents, in Echkily-Tash (2400 m). |
| Day 3-5 |
Trek approximately 40 km from Echkily-Tash through the Tuz Pass (4090 m) to a place called by the local people, Chon-Tash (large stone). On the way it is possible to see the various animals that live in the region: mountain goats, wild rams (arhars), berkuts and marmots. Overnight in tents. |
| Day 6 |
Trek about 20 km from Chon-Tash along a well-defined path to the "Green Glade" Camp. This is a seasonal camping area which is at a height of 3400 m. Overnight in tents. |
| Day 7-8 |
Visit Lake Mercbaher, a mountain lake that overflows into River Enilchek when the snow thaws. The lake is at a height of 3500 m at the confluence of two glaciers: Northern Enilchek and Southern Enilchek. The surface of the lake is ice-free, whilst the bottom of the lake is frozen solid. Overnight in tents. |
| Day 9-10 |
Trek to the Southern Enilchek Glacier, considered to be the second largest in the world (about 62 kms in legth), to the Wild Glacier. From here it is possible to look across the Asterisk Glacier and see, 20 kms away, what is probably the most difficult mountain to climb in the world - Pobeda (Victory) Peak. In the opposite drection, as if flying through the sky, is one of the most beautiful mountains in the world - the marble pyramid of the mighty Khan-Tengry Peak. Overnight in tents. |
| Day 11 | Trek to Pesnya Abaya (Song of Abay) Mountain. Overnight in tents. |
| Day 12-16 |
Return via "Green Glacier" Camp to the transfer base at Maida-Adyr, which is at a height of 2540 m on the flood plain of the Enilchek River. Overnight in tents. |
| Day 17 |
Travel back to Karakol over the Chon-Ashuu Pass (3822 m) where it is possible to get a perfect view of the peaks of the Central Tien-Shan Range. Accomodation in private houses. |
| Day 18 |
Depart to Bishkek. Family run accomodation in Bishkek. |
| Day 19 | Flight home. |
Level of difficulty: This tour is recommended for people with hiking experience (hiking time approximately 6-7 hours per day).
Conditions: It is necessary to bring a sleeping bag, warm clothers, trekking boots and your own First Aid Kit.
