This is a chance to feel like a nomad and spend 6 days in the saddle in the Ala-Too Mountains. The horses are the unique "New Kyrgyz" breed, which are hardy and stable. Along the way you will visit 6 different high mountain lakes, get a great view of Issyk-Kul Lake from the top of the mountains and see wild forests with indigenous trees: juniper, barbaris and blue pine trees. You may touch the San-Tash stone barrow, which was laid by warriors of Tamerlain's army. You will be pleasantly surprised by the hospitality of the local people. During the entire trip, you will be looked-after by people who are being supported by the Development Company. The food found here comes from all over Asia and gives you the chance to try the food of the different nationalities living here.
Itinerary
| Day 1 |
Arrival in Bishkek. Depart for Karakol - 400 km. Visit the San-Tash barrow. Arrive in Karakol. Family run accomodation. Supper with a local family. You will try real Eastern food. |
| Day 2 |
Depart from Karakol to Kurmenty village (45 km) by car. Travel through the Kurmenty Gorge on horseback (approximately 6 hours). Spend a night under the stars. |
| Day 3 |
Travel to Kurmenty Pass (approximately 3 hours). Climb to the Pass (altitude 3800 m). There is a beautiful high-mountain lake with trout. After 2 hours descend to 2800 m. Overnight in tents. |
| Day 4 |
Travel to 2 mountain lakes (approximately 3 hours). Travel to Kol-Say Gorge. Overnight in tents. |
| Day 5 |
5 hours travel to Kol-Say Lake, which is surrounded by a forest that contains many mushrooms. The altitude of the lake is 2000 m. Overnight in tents. |
| Day 6 |
7 hours travel to Sary-Bulak Pass. Camp on the lakeshore. |
| Day 7 |
1 hour travel through the Sary-Bulak Pass (altitude 3500 m) and 5 hours descending from the Pass. There is a great view of Issyk-Kul Lake - the pearl of Kyrgyzstan. A car will be waiting at the head of the pass. Depart for Karakol. Family run accomodation. |
| Day 8 |
Karakol city tour. Departure to Bishkek. Lunch in Tamga village. Supper and rest in family run accomodation in Bishkek. |
| Day 9 | Fly home. |
Level of difficulty: This tour is recommended for people with elementary horse riding skills (riding time approximately 5-7 hours per day).
Conditions: It is necessary to bring a sleeping bag, warm clothes and trekking boots.
