Red-Billed Chough Ibisbill Red-fronted Serrin

Duration: 13 Days
Season: beginning of May - middle of September

During the tour we can encounter the following species almost every day and are therefore called the 'normal' species of Kyrgyzstan

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival on Bishkek Airport. We will depart immediately to Kaska Suu Guesthouse with a possibility to rest from the flight or start birdwatching immediately around the hotel. Species Azure Tit, Yellow-breasted Azure Tit and Rock Bunting. Overnight in guesthouse Kaska Suu.
Day 2 In the morning departure to fishing ponds north of Bishkek, birding here till the afternoon. In the afternoon we will visit the agricultural area around the ponds. In Bishkek we can see Alpine Swifts flying in great numbers above the city. Species : Little Bittern, Black-crowned Night-heron, Little Bustard and Blue-cheeked Bea-eater. Overnight in guesthouse Kaska Suu.
Day 3 Transport to Chon Kemin National Park. We will follow the route along the Chuy river where we will stop at some small marches for Pygmy Cormorant and White-crowned Penduline Tits. We will visit later on the day Burana Tower where we can spot the valley for hunting raptors, Eagles and Buzzards. In the gorge to Kemin village we can spot Golden Eagle, also Stewart's Bunting is a good possibility. Arrival in the evening at Ashu Guesthouse.
Day 4 Start with an excursion before breakfast where we hope to see Turkestan Shrikes and Oriental Turtledoves. In the agricultural fields we will probably hear Common Quail and Corncrakes. After breakfast we will move to the river to find Ibisbill. In the afternoon we will go in the "Azure Tit Gorge" and try to find many Azure Tits and hopefully also Yellow-Breasted Azure Tit. Night in Ashu Guesthouse.
Day 5 Transport to Karakol. After breakfast first a small stop at the Kemin River for again Ibisbill. We will drive to Balykchy and stop at some semi-desert areas where we will search for Black-bellied-, Pallas's Sandgrouse and Demoiselle Crane. We will continue further to an area full of marshes at the Issyk Kul Lake where we can find Sykes Warbler, Black-backed Citrine Wagtail and many Scarlet Rosefinches. Arrival Late in the evening at guesthouse Greenyard.
Day 6 This day we will switch from our common transportation to a Kamaz Russian army truck and drive to May Saz Valley located on approximately 3500 meters altitude. There is no road and also no accommodation available. We will sleep for 2 nights in an arranged field camp. Species : Rosefinch (Great-, Red-mantled- and Red-faced), Accentors (Alpine-, Altai-, Brown- and Back-throated), Plain Mountain Finch and White-browed Tit Warbler. Overnight in May Saz field Camp.
Day 7 All day birding in May Saz area for high mountain birds. Main targets will be Himalayan Snowcock, Himalayan Griffon Vulture and Guldenstadt's Redstart. Overnight in May Saz field camp.
Day 8 Transport day to Tamga. We will leave in the morning after breakfast. In Karakol we will change again to our more luxurious and faster transportation. We will visit the beautiful scenery of Yeti Oguz and then move towards Tamga, located very closely at the Issyk Kul lake. Overnight in Tamga Guesthouse
Day 9 All day will be spend near Tamga where we will go birding in a surreal moon landscape. This place will be visited for Desert Finches (Crimson-winged, Mongolian and Desert Finch), Pied Wheatear, Grey-necked Bunting and Horned Larks. Overnight in Tamga Guesthouse.
Day 10 Transport to Son Kul Lake. We will drive in the morning early to Balykchy where we will again visit some marches and semi-desert areas for Black-bellied-, Pallas's Sandgrouse and Demoiselle Crane. Overnight in traditional yurt camp near Son Kul Lake.
Day 11 All day birding near the Son Kul lake where we can expect to see lots of waterfowl. Ducks (Rudy Shelduck, Gadwall, Northern Pintail and Tufted Duck) and Grebes (Red-necked-, Great-crested-, Horned- and Black-necked). Also yearly Great Black-headed Gulls and Lesser Sand Plovers are spotted.
Day 12 Transport day back to Bishkek. We will leave in the morning and do some birding along the way. Species : Red-billed Chough, Guldenstadt's Redstart, Evermann's Redstart, Himalayan Rubythroat and Snowfinch.
Day 13 Flight back to home

Level of difficulty: This tour is recommended for people with hiking experience (hiking time approximately 4-6 hours per day).

Conditions: It is necessary to bring a sleeping bag, warm clothes and trekking boots.
